Are parents responsible for childhood obesity?

We hear and see it more often, more and more children face considerable weight problems.

Several messages from the media report that children too little exercise, too much snacking and therefore unhealthy diet. But how can this be explained? Most parents want their child grows healthy and preferably still meets the ideal image that prevails in society. Or is this just the problem? His considerable weight problems like obesity, due to the education of the parents to their child?

Obesity or overweight, is a serious problem. This problem is worst for children at a young age. According Binsbergen obese children have a significant risk of mental and physical illness and are often obese adults.

Interventions in overweight children

Only the parents play an important role when it comes to their child’s eating habits, or are there other things to play? It is important to the family outside to look at possible causes for the obesity of the child. One such child is at school where his classmates which are interrelated. The child watches television that many influential ads are shown, where for a fun and child friendly products contain them in the basket like mama like to see. For parents on the television told that this baby product contains 0% fat, but unfortunately this product or much sugar. According to the Nutrition Center (2010) parents are also poorly informed about products in the store.

This means that if parents do not have enough information about products, they are difficult to really know what is healthy for their child.

Genetic Factor
In addition to these influences is important for the genetic factor in this story not to forget. The fact is that 70% of the fat is genetic, and thus the extent to which the child can arrive. This would mean that parents, 30% influence on the possible development of their child obesity.

Eating Habits
As others argue, parents just have to be responsible for their child’s eating habits. This is clear from various blogs and polls on the Internet. Parents have a role model within the family. This example plays an important role when it comes to eating. They should show how, and what is important for food such as fruits and vegetables.

Parents are ultimately responsible for what happens on the table, they were preparing the meal. Where parents are responsible for the degree of movement for their children, too many children hanging behind the TV or sitting behind the Playstation. Children need lots of exercise and it allows the parent is also hard to join them by example, rather than hanging on the couch and to the child saying he or she must go beyond football.

Another example is weak parents. These poor parents can say no with the result that the child ever floats his way as the example wants candy. In this way there are no boundaries when it comes to food and sneak the bad (eating) habits are still faster. Parents who are very busy in life with work and socializing, often opt for the easy meal, such as a fast food, but often these bites are not as healthy as they think.

Obese children in recent years more attention. Obesity, which is most common in America, is also increasingly common in the Europe. There are more and more activities around this theme. For example the recent television program.

Recently, an NHG-standard (Dutch College of General Practitioners) relating to obesity in the GP Law. “The Obesity NHG-Standard provides guidance for the diagnosis and treatment of adults and children over two years with obesity. It provides guidelines for the diagnosis and stated that the policy applies to obesity. This policy is focused on how obesity is tackled. It will include an individual treatment plan that realistic targets. For example, a child is not realistic that he or she must diets. Often it is important that healthy eating and doing so in the weight stays and does not arrive. In the policy are important issues discussed and defined as including the family history of obesity, environmental factors, motivation to lose weight, diet, use of drugs, psychosocial issues and beliefs about healthy weight. From here you can start a good guidance.

Especially in the psychiatric field, where problems may arise due to obesity, there will be of assistance. A child with low self-esteem to depressive symptoms often go to a child psychologist. It will cooperate with the health professionals who closely monitor.

As described above, opinions are divided about who ultimately is responsible for obesity or overweight in children. All factors that influence a child to contribute to the problem. So the parent, classmate, advertising and bad information all contribute to this problem. Fortunately there is already responding to this problem.
